In some ways, Spyware and Adware are even more insidious and debilitating than viruses. Usually a virus will do something destructive to your computer and will show itself in some way. Or, your antivirus program will catch it and eliminate it.  Spyware and Adware are much harder to detect, and since they don't do anything inherently destructive, you may never know they're there.

Instead, this type of malware can sit on your computer for months and even years, quietly collecting information from you to target your computer  AND YOU.
